Trunk or Treat #1

This was our ward's night for Trunk or Treat. It was so much fun. Rachel has saved this costume from Aunt Dawn for two years. She loves it!

She is sitting on a pumpkin. Her idea.

Tyler did a great job on the trunk. He did have his laptop in the back playing a Halloween movie, but the flashing pumkin stole the show. Rachel loved getting candy, but being in the dark with flahing lights coming out of cars freaked her out. She was very nervous, but her rewards were great! She can't wait for Grandma's trick or treating tomorrow night.

VOTE 2008

I

(Actually, Tori and I both did, but nobody makes posters that say "we voted". )

Even though Utah is such a politically homogenous place that I could tell you today with 99% accuracy who is going to win in each contest, it was cool to see so many people taking the time to involve themselves in the democratic process.

The lines today were super long and there is still a week until the actual election. If I were you, I'd vote early and not wait until the last minute.

Super Cute!

She is so funny sometimes. She likes to dress up and sugar is her number one food group. This was the perfect picture. She is watching the construction trucks outside our condo. Doesn't she look so relaxed?

Corn Maze

We went to Black Island Farm in Syracuse for the Corn Maze / Farm Animals / Fall Carnival thing tonight with Rachel.
Pictures:
She kept saying: "I'm so tall!"
Rachel led us through the maze:

Bonfire:
It was a lot of fun, we'd reccomend the place to anyone.

30 Rock

30 Rock premiers next week on NBC, but starting tomorrow you can watch it a week early on Hulu. Just another reason that hulu is awesome.

While Tori worries about the yogurt we're eating, I'm now spending my days watching and worrying about this:
We decided to take a little money and play around with the purchase of a few stocks. Now I need everybody to go out and buy a car from GM and fly somewhere on Delta Airlines.

Sugar Alert

Which is more nutrient dense or healthy? Nonfat Fiber One Yogurt or Great Value nonfat Yogurt? The winner is. . .Great Value. The Great Value brand is made with aspartame which isn't the best ingredient, but it is not in the top five ingredients meaning it is not very prevalent in the yogurt. In the Fiber One brand, the second ingredient is high fructose corn syrup. I know you've seen the commercials promoting this product. Try to tell your kidneys and gallbladder that it isn't so bad, and get back to me. Now, the Fiber One has 10 less calories, but you're eating less yogurt, so it balances out with the Great Value. FYI for other nutritional facts: Great Value is higher in vitamin C and Calcium. It is also higher in sodium, but if you compare the serving sizes, the two are just about the same.
That is your health alert for today. Now, go buy some Great Value Yogurt. (Actually, after completing a project for class, the Weight Watcher's yogurt brand is the most nutrient dense or healthiest.)

No Sugar Challenge

That is right. Tyler and I are off sugar for one month (Oct 20-Nov 20). Some might say that this is a horrible time for this challenge due to the holidays. On the contrary, this is the best time for this challenge because of the holidays. My 10 year old brother-in-law Matt is my inspiration. He did this last year around this time with zero mistakes. Amazing! When he sets a goal for himself, he is full speed ahead. Surely, if he can do it, so can we. I am totally off sugar (minus natural sugars-obviously) while Tyler is allowing some sugar like in jam and oatmeal etc. We decided that when we accomplish our goal, we are buying a futon for our den. I am so excited. This is the jump start to my goal to drop 10-15 pounds before I start my internship (Women in Motion Marathon Training) in January. Tyler is also working to be healthier. Give us support and NO TEMPTATIONS. We are not that strong! ha ha Wish us Luck and maybe even join us!

Rachel's Birthday!

Our Little Lady celebrated her two years of life Sunday with the Lloyd family. Birthdays are always so much fun. I think they are my favorite holidays. Corbin helped Rachel open her plethora of gifts. She loved all of them. Thanks everyone. I think her favorite right now is a baby doll that glows in the dark from her Uncle Matt.

It was fun to watch her open presents now that she understands that something is hidden inside.
Grandma and Grandpa gave her a little kitchen set that makes noise. Maybe now, she'll stay out of Mommy's kitchen. (highly unlikely)
Rachel loooves candy, so Daddy made a cake full of M&Ms. She only ate the candy on top.
She watched the candles closely and blew them out in just one try.

Grandma gave her these balloons a few days earlier, and she just has to sleep with them. I was worried about the strings at first, but she does alright, and we move them after she falls asleep. I never knew a little girl could love balloons so much.

The Choice

Every four years Frontline runs an impartial, in-depth program about the lives and personalities of the presidential candidates.
I'm a total nerd and Frontline has always been one of my favorite shows, but anyone who plans on voting for president this year should watch tonight on PBS or online starting tomorrow:

Finished

And now for some exciting news that nobody will care about but me:

I've finally finished the plans for our next phase of town homes at Stoneleigh Heights in Draper.
This is significant because we had to complete what is normally a 6-week plan creation process in less than 8 days.  Next time you're in Suncrest, stop by and marvel at what we've accomplished.  Better yet, buy one of them so that my company doesn't go out of business:
I'm now going to go home and spend time with my family for the first time in 2 weeks.

Princess Rachel

Melinda took this picture of Rachel yesterday:
Rachel is now officially 2 years old, though as far as she knows, her birthday isn't until Sunday when we're celebrating it with family.

Also, has anyone else seen the weather for this weekend?  If you thought last weekend was bad in Utah.......

Where were we then?

Our lives lately consist of little more than work, school and sleeping. This doesn't make for much of anything notable to blog about, so we've decided that from time to time we'll post copies of our journal entries about what we were doing exactly 5 years ago. Tyler was serving in the Russia Vladivostok Mission and Tori was preparing to go to the Venezuala Caracas Mission. (We made it just in time because both of our missions are now closed to foreign missionaries) We'd met at BYU-Idaho the year before and were writing each other as friends. Anyhoo, here's what we were each doing this weekend in 2003:

Tyler (Oct. 2003)

October 2003-

Well, its been a busy past few days. On Wednesday night, we went running in the park with Sergei for Young Mens. It was good, and we were supposed to run 10 kilometers in under an hour for him to complete a requirement for his Duty to God award. Sergei was pretty proud of himself. On Thursday we did service with Lena, an inactive member at the Детский сад (Kindergarten) where she works, and we got to play with the kids which was fun.

Thursday night, President Oswald and Elder Clark flew in. Sister Oswald came a day early to practice for The Messiah. We had English club on Thursday night, and it went well. A cool man named Sergei that we met on the street came. We are going to baptize him and he is going to become the branch president. Friday we worked with Elder Clark, one of the APs and we had good Ds with Tatyana and Anatoli. I also got my AIDS test done to renew my visa next week in Korea. We went to the Messiah last night. It was the first time it has been performed on Sakhalin and was a really miraculous production. It lasted until 10:30, then we came home and E. Clark stayed with us. He and E. Harmer are good friends (from the same MTC group) and we stayed up talking until about 2AM then finally went to bed. We had zone conference this morning at the Kammer’s apartment, which went really well, and I feel that I learned a lot. The spirit was strong and it was a really beneficial thing for me especially. I learned a lot about myself and how I can become a better Elder.

We then had lunch with President @ Pacific Café where he interviewed us. We had a discussion with Masha and her dad. She is 22 and we tracted into her the other day and made a return appt. for tonight. Well, they just wanted to Bible bash with us. We had a really long беседа (discussion) with them, and really testified strong to them at the end. They didn’t accept anything, but I really felt the promptings of the spirit, and recognized times when it wasn’t me talking, though the words came out of my mouth. It was a growing experience for me. I only wish they had accepted our message. Maybe someday they will. Anatoli, Elder and Sister Kammer’s neighbor, drove us home and as were coming up the hill, we noticed that the whole neighborhood was glowing orange. As we got closer to our place, we realized that out neighbor’s house was burning down. Across the street from our little house several Новый русский are building mansions and one of them was completely in flames. We got out our cameras, took some pictures then finally came home.

As has become the norm lately, we didn't have electricity when we got home, and I am currently writing by candlelight. The mafia arson across the street made for an interesting end to the day. I wonder what tomorrow has in store.

Looking back now-
I can't believe that it has already been five years. I was one of four elders and a senior couple serving on the island of Sakhalin at the time, and I still miss it today. I had an amazing mission president who is now a member of the general Sunday School presidency (He spoke today in the afternoon session of conference.) The church was only a few years old, and most of the members were youth that we had met through our weekly English club. At the time, the branch sometimes felt like a youth club or something. I wondered if the gospel would take root there. It has been amazing for me to watch these past 5 years as these kids have grown, gone on missions of their own, married each other, and are now raising their own children and families on Sakhalin. Because of visa problems, American missionaries are no longer called to Russia, but the members there are doing a remarkable job of carrying forth the gospel on their own.

Tori (Oct. 2003)

October 2003-
It has been awhile again, and I have tons of up-dates, I went to Carlie and Jared Davis’ wedding in Utah. Then, I went to Rexburg for a week. It was strange being there and not living there. I felt a little out of place, but mostly, I had fun. I saw Jethro. He’s still a good guy, but I’ve moved on from him. He really did bless my life. I wish him the best. I miss Angie and Mandy already. So much will change. I love it and hate it all together. When I came home from my visit, I was so focused and ready to leave for the MTC. I’m still ready, but I think I distract myself. I went to the temple 3 days ago. It was…different and scary and wonderful all together. I went again yesterday for Taralee and Bryson Revees’ wedding. It was much better the second time. I still struggle, but that was ok. I really do love the temple. I’m excited for when there will be a check mark in the sealing box after my mission!!!

Speaking of boys . . . (I know! I’m crazy!) I don’t want to say too much, because I don’t want to dwell on it or mess it up, but I’ve been writing a friend for 14 months who is serving in Russia. He writes me too. Who know what will happen, but what a cool story. Tyler Lloyd and I met at BYU-I (see journal pg. 9). We’ll write during our missions and then . . . I think that would be neat. He is really awesome. Everyone likes Tyler. I’m just buying my last items for my mission. 3 weeks!!!

Looking Back Now-

I have always been boy crazy. Apparently, I was still boy crazy 3 weeks before I left on my mission-dumb. I am sure glad that my thoughts about what would happen to Tyler and I came to be true. It was exactly what I wanted. I actually had a very good idea that we would marry a long time before he left on his mission. It was not a love at first sight kind of thing. We just simply had a great connection and friendship from the beginning and fell in love while writing each other over 2 ½ years. What a great way to build a relationship, by the way. Also, I write about Tyler a lot in my mission journal, but I was not a distracted missionary. Missionary work is too hard to be distracted.

Tag

Usually, I think Tags are time consuming and silly. However, this one was easy, so I did it.
You pick the 4th image from the 4th folder of your pictures and post it. Here is ours:
It is of Rachel's wagon under our tree from last Christmas morning.

Potty Time

Kudos to Rachel for using the potty chair for the first time today!
